Laurel Senior High School strives to prepare all students for success in the 21st century. For some students that may mean preparing for college by taking dual enrollment courses offered with a partnership with Del Tech Community College, or taking Advanced Placement classes, which both provide students the ability to earn college credits while still in high school. The instructional programming focuses on hands on opportunities to solve real world problems through the use of higher order thinking, graphic organizers, and collaborative work between students. Teachers create student centered instruction by truly knowing their students and forming relationships that allow them to tailor lessons to individual student needs.
Laurel High School provides its students with technology in order to access a number of online resources, most recently this includes our L3 (Laurel Learning Lab) classes. Students are enrolled in online college classes with Del-Tech Community College and have the opportunity to take those classes in a more collegiate-like setting.
Students may also choose to follow one of Laurel High School’s Career pathways, which include Bio-Medical Engineering, Culinary & Hospitality Management, National Academy of Finance (Business), Plant & Horticulture Sciences, K-12 Teacher Academy, and HVAC Service. Students who wish to enter the workforce directly out of high school may graduate with industry certificates in Pesticide Application, ServSafe, National Restaurant Certificate of Achievement, ParaPro, Praxis One, NAFTrack, CPR, and HVAC Technician. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a number of student career organizations such as Business Professionals of America, EdRising, Health Occupations Student of America, Future Farmers of America, and ProStart.
Additionally, Laurel High School offers a variety of sports and extracurricular activities for all students to complete their high school experience. Laurel High School boasts the only competition band in Sussex County, DE. Already in the 2019-2020 school year our band has competed in two competitions, earning first place in a variety of areas in those contests. Laurel High School was recently featured in a local newspaper for our revitalized FFA program, including sending students to the national competition just this September. Laurel High School is committed to educating the “whole child”, and truly works to prepare all students for success in the 21st Century.
