Laurel Elementary School opened its doors in August of 2018. The school is located behind the historic 1921 building on South Central Avenue in Laurel, DE. The school houses approximately students in grades 1-6 and currently employs 130 staff members. The building itself was designed with children to provide a holistic learning experience for the students. Each community was constructed using a different theme. Each theme represents a different geographical region of the world such as the ocean, rainforest, mountains and coral reef.
The students at Laurel Elementary are fortunate to be exposed to two newly adopted curricula, Bookworms and Illustrative Mathematics. The Bookworms curriculum is different than most of the typical language arts programs available. The students have the opportunity to engage in high quality text by reading novels on a daily basis. Illustrative Mathematics focuses on more authentic problem solving and the modeling of mathematical thinking versus exercise tasks and learning by memorization. In addition, all of the students have access to the Dreambox math program and grades 3-6 also utilize Achieve 3000. These are online programs that provide additional practice in math and reading comprehension.
There is always something to do at Laurel Elementary as well! In October, the PTO holds a fall festival. This year the festival includes a trunk or treat, chili cook off, as well as a pumpkin carving contest. Just before winter break, Winterfest takes place. Last year was the first annual Winterfest which was well attended and highly popular. That evening there are numerous auction items, a festival of trees, and lots of goodies for all who attend. Last but not least, is the annual Dog Dayz 5K. Each spring, a Friday evening is selected to hold the 5K run/walk. This is a great night of fellowship and exercise!
